We would like to start off by introducing our family to you. Brian (a Deputy Sheriff) and Angela (a Medical Office Manager) Oswald along with their two sons, Hunter and Chase, and Connie Smith (Angela's mom who is a Licensed Practicing Nurse at a Cardiology Office) all reside at 4947 Streamside Court in Liberty Township, Ohio. This is approximately 25 miles North of Cincinnati, Ohio. Brian, Angela and Connie's decision to build a home together wasn't decided overnight. It was a decision made with years of thought behind it.
Connie's husband and Angela's father, Mike, had suffered from a long history of diabetes and other health issues. As Mike's health deteriorated he had concerns about Connie's life after he was gone. Several family talks ensued and Connie made the decision after 30 years to go back to school to become an L.P.N. (Licensed Practicing Nurse). She graduated in the year 2000. Mike felt better that after 25 years of being married and a stay-at-home mom that she had an education in a profession that would give her the opportunity to have a job with medical benefits after he would be gone. Now Mike's concerns lead to Connie being in the house alone and would she be able to take care of it by herself. Having discussions about loosing a loved one, especially when that person is still alive and actively part of the conversations, is never easy but necessary to ensure that that person's wishes and wants are carried out. Feelings, thoughts and ideas were talked about many times between Connie, Mike, Brian and Angela. An idea was presented that if the Connie and Mike's home became too much for Connie to handle after Mike was gone that building a home with Brian and Angela might be an alternative. At the time Brian and Angela had what would be considered a "starter home" that didn't leave much room for starting a family. Brian and Angela had already been discussing building a home in the near future. Mike's exact words to this were, "whatever will make Connie happy is all I want."
Brian and Angela had their son Hunter in August 2001 and knew they had already outgrown their current home. They had started talking seriously about building or purchasing a bigger home to accommodate their family with room to grow. Just after midnight on May, 9, 2002, Mike suffered a massive coronary which result in his immediate passing. Reality hit. All those hypothetical talks with Mike were now something that seriously needed to be discussed.
